The neighbourhood bakery — one of those little pieces of Moroccan life that I love.

Walk through the residential streets of Marrakech and sooner or later you’ll come across a small local bakery like this one. It might not look like much from the outside, but inside, the oven is doing a steady trade all day long.
Bread is a huge part of daily life in Morocco. Khobz — the round Moroccan bread you’ll see on almost every table — is eaten with breakfast, tagines, salads, soups… and, of course, used to scoop up all those delicious sauces.
But here’s the part many visitors don’t realize: people often prepare their bread dough at home and bring it to the neighbourhood bakery to be baked.
Families shape their loaves, mark them so they know which ones belong to them, then carry them to the ferran — the communal oven — where the baker takes over. Later, they return to collect their freshly baked bread.
These ovens have been part of Moroccan neighbourhood life for generations. They’re practical, economical and also wonderfully communal. The baker knows whose bread is whose, neighbours cross paths coming and going, and the smell of warm bread drifts out into the street. ❤️
It’s easy to come to Marrakech and be captivated by the palaces, souks and beautiful riads. But I’m just as fascinated by places like this — the everyday spaces that give you a glimpse into how people actually live.
