Fes Chouara Tanneries

Operating for nearly 1,000 years with unchanged manual techniques, the rows of stone vessels are filled with white softening liquids and bright natural dyes…Famous for vibrant colors alongside a very strong, distinct scent.

The Fes Chouara Tanneries. It is one of the three tanneries in the city of Fez, Morocco. It is the largest tannery in the city and one of the oldest. It is located in the Fes el Bali, the oldest medina quarter of the city, near the Saffarin Madrasa along the Oued Fes.

Since the inception of the city, the tanning industry has been continually operating in the same fashion as it did in the early centuries.

Today, the tanning industry in the city is considered one of the main tourist attractions.

The tanneries are packed with the round stone vessels filled with dye or white liquids for softening the hides.

The leather goods produced in the tanneries are exported around the world.

You can smell the tannery as you get near it. As you enter you are offered bushels of mint to lift to your nose to break the distinct smell, if you’d like.

The entire leather production process comprises manual labor only and involves no modern machinery, and has retained methods unchanged since medieval times.

It’s truly remarkable. Make sure you book a local guide when you visit Fes medina to get the full experience. Contact me to book one of Morocco’s best guides!
