The Wine Village of Sirince || Turkey Destination Highlight
In countries where wine is made, there is always a place that is called “wine country”.
Turkey has one, off the Aegean coast, outside of Kusadasi. Sirince (prounounced, sheh-ringe-eh) is a small village of about 600 in population. The name used to be Cirkince which meant “ugly”, a name the Greeks had called it to detere anyone from following them to it. It, in fact, is just the opposite – a quaint little village oozing with character. In 1926, the governer of the province of Izmir changed it to Sirince, meaning cute. Fitting, no? 🙂
As you walk through the village from where they make you park at the bottom, so to have a walking experience into the village, you pass through the cobblestoned streets where homes and small bed and breakfasts line the sides.
Eventually you find yourself in the center of the village, where the “action” is.
There are the normal every day shops, the souvenir shops, then the wine shops. They have sitting areas in some where you can order a wine tasting of the local fruit wines.
Sirince basically has 12 kinds of fruit wines, while peaches, blackberries and grapes are its main. We tasted cherry, pomegranate and others…and they were lovely as well!
There are also wine tastings places in the central area where you basically can stand up at the bar and try if you are “on the fly” and dont’ want to take the time to do a sit down wine tasting.
The village is a wonderful place to spend an afternoon. There is not only the wines, but there is some glass jewlery making, an old church and sitting having lunch and taking in all the fresh fruit that is in season at the time.
